frequently asked questions

upcycled ingredients & Susainablity

spent grain info:

  • Spent grain is the leftover malted barley from the beer brewing process. After the sugars have been extracted, what's left is a fiber- and protein-rich grain—perfect for sustainable, delicious snacks like Shelby Shakes granola!

  • Yes! Spent grain is high in fiber, protein, and essential nutrients. It's a great way to enjoy a healthy snack and reduce food waste at the same time.

  • We partner with local craft breweries to rescue and repurpose their spent grain the same day it's brewed to ensure freshness and minimal waste. This reduces transportation emissions and supports community-based, closed-loop systems!

We save grains from Steamworks Brewing Co., Carver’s Brewing Co., & Animas Brewing Co.

  • Nope! The brewing process removes all alcohol-producing sugars from the grain. Our granola contains no alcohol and tastes nothing like beer—just hearty, nutty goodness.

  • It’s nutritious, eco-friendly, and too good to waste! By upcycling spent grain into granola, we reduce food waste, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and help create a more sustainable food system.

Billions of pounds of spent grain are relegated to lower uses annually (compost, animal feed, landfills, etc). By upcycling it into food, we are realizing the grains’ highest potential, which has amazing benefits:

    • reducing landfill waste

    • lowering carbon emissions (especially when picked up by bike!)

    • making the best use of the resources that went into growing and processing the grain.

  • Since our granola contains barley, it is not gluten-free. Barley contains gluten, so it’s not suitable for those with celiac disease or gluten intolerance.

If you are simply trying to lessen your gluten consumption, try our gluten-free flavor made with certified organic, gluten-free rolled oats (instead of spent grain)!

  • We work with local businesses to utilize upcycled ingredients, offer zero-waste packaging options, and are a totally bike-powered operation!

Aquafaba info:

  • Aquafaba is the starchy liquid from cooked chickpeas. It works as a plant-based binder and egg substitute in recipes—perfect for making granola without eggs or oil.

  • We source our aquafaba from LuvTempeh, a local tempeh maker who cooks chickpeas for their fermentation process.

  • We use aquafaba as a sustainable alternative to eggs or oil. It helps bind the granola while reducing food waste (since it's often discarded).

Check out this guide to aquafaba for even more info & inspiration!

  • No! We ensure that our aquafaba comes from chickpeas that have been cooked from dry, and not canned chickpeas (which could contain leeched BPA from the can’s lining).

  • Nope! Aquafaba has a very mild flavor that disappears during baking. Our granola tastes just like delicious, crunchy granola—no bean flavor at all!
