MEET SHELBY
Shelby Shakes began when Shelby saw an opportunity to give the “spent” grain from breweries new life. She carted a borrowed wagon over to Steamworks Brewing Company, scooped up the soaked grains from outside the restaurants’ doors, and got to making her first batches of spent grain granola.
Shelby with her very first bucket of spent grain!
“As I refined the granola recipe, I stated to wonder, ‘is this stuff actually good for you?’ After many evenings of research and taste-testing, I learned that brewer’s spent grain isn’t ‘spent’ at all - these leftover grains from the brewing process are rich in fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals. Not to mention their wonderfully complex, graham-crackery flavor!”
The first bag of Shelby Shakes was sold at a garage sale in the Fall of 2023. At the end of the sale, Shelby discovered that she made more from selling granola than all the other things at the garage sale combined! Shelby quit her two part time jobs as a barista and homeschool teacher to pursue Shelby Shakes full-time.
Shelby Shakes is dedicated to saving good food from going to waste. The grains and other upcycled ingredients we use in our granola are delicious, nutritious, and give our community in Durango
